Two Newspaper Clippings, one of Hon. John B. Madigan of Houlton & the other of his grandson Dr. John B. Madigan

Two newspaper clippings, one a photograph of the late Hon. John Bernard Madigan, with a handwritten date of 1918 on it, and the other a wedding photograph of his namesake grandson, Dr. John B. Madigan.  Hon. John B. Madigan died 9 January 1918 at Houlton, Maine.

Caption: Married by Archbishop - Dr. John B. Madigan of Moulton [sic, s/b Houlton], Me., and Mildred H. Moriarty of Quincy are married by Archbishop Cushing at St. Cecilia's Church, Back Bay.

These clippings were found with a collection of photographs and a few other items, some of which are obviously related, such as these clippings, but most are unidentified and therefore a real challenge to research.

What's intriguing, though, is that the clipping of the wedding has a name written on the that appears to be Lawler or Lawlis, as on one of the photographs. If you can clear up this mystery, please leave a comment.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

John Bernard Madigan was born at Houlton, Maine, on, I believe, 24 January 1863, the son of James Cottrill Madigan and Mary Anna (Whittier) Madigan.

My hesitation on the birth date is that the official record and various obituaries and tributes show 24 January 1863, but a Find-a-Grave listing shows 24 January 1864 and doesn't provide a photograph of the stone itself so that I could check for a typo.

On 23 January 1890 at Houlton, Maine, John Bernard Madigan married Lucia Jeanette Rose, daughter of John and Sarah (Putnam) Rose.  Lucia was born 11 April 1866 in Maine.

John and Lucia had at least two children, a son and a daughter.  The son, James Cottrill Madigan III, would marry Doris Waterall, daughter of William Lucas Waterall, a Philadelphia native, and Jessamine (Lovejoy) Waterall of Houlton, Maine.  They were the parents of Dr. John B. Madigan, shown in the wedding photograph.

    1. Interesting... A clue pointing to Lawlis, rather than Lawler. Feel free to add more information on the Madigan and Lawlis families, here in the comments or in a file or document, which you can send me, and I'll add to the body of the post. Thanks for your comment!

  2. Haha, my great grandfather as well. (Hi Cuz) The second John B, his grandson, is my uncle. The Judge's 2 kids James Cotrill and Alice Frances Madigan. Alice married Robert Lawlis. They were married Nov 20, 1919. They had three kids Robert, Richard and Joann. Where did you get the clippings? It looks like my grandmothers hand writing.
