1884 Autograph Album of Signers from East Palestine, Ohio

1884 autograph album, approximately 6-1/4" x 4", that contains pages signed by 27 residents of East Palestine, Ohio, and one from Negley, Ohio.

Sadly, the first end paper is partially missing.  It bears the date 1884 but, if there ever was an owner's name, it was on the missing portion.  Nor did any of the signers inscribe their pages to a specific person.

Most signers gave a date of 22 March 1884; perhaps they were gathered at a birthday party or other celebration in honor of the album owner.

W. H. Van Fossan of East Palestine, Ohio, signed a page on 22 March 1884.

Lavinia Coppock of East Palestine, Ohio, signed a page on 22 March 1884.

Lizzie M. Winter or Winters of East Palestine, Ohio, signed a page on 22 March 1884.

Sadie E. Wolfe of East Palestine, Ohio, signed a page on 22 March 1884.

W. C. Kreusch of East Palestine, Ohio, signed on 22 March 1884.

One of the later autographed pages in the album was penned by Lizzie Billingsley of Negley, Ohio, on 8 June 1884.

While researching one of the names that I found difficult at first to decipher, I noticed that the signer and his future wife each signed pages in the album.  S. J. Lowry and Maude Chamberlin, each of East Palestine, Ohio, signed pages on 22 March 1884.  There may have been more matches in the album.

If you have information on the signers above or the others, listed in alphabetical order below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

1880s Autograph Album of Theresa Beightol of Utica, Pennsylvania

[Note:  Thanks to the several Google+ genealogists who helped me decipher some of the handwriting in this album.]

1880s autograph album of Theresa Beightols of Utica, Pennsylvania, who signed her ownership page on 22 February 1882, though some people expressed their sentiments a bit earlier than that.

The album is approximately 5-1/2" x 3-1/4" and contains pages of sentiments signed by over 40 people, including Theresa herself, her relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Theresa Ann Beightol was born about February 1869 at Canal Township, Pennsylvania, in Venango County, the daughter of Charles B. and Clara M. (Stevens) Beightol.

Theresa's three brothers signed pages in her album.  In page order:

  • T. A. Beightol of Canal, Pennsylvania, signed a page on 13 February 1882.  He was Thomas Beightol, Theresa's younger brother.
  • E. J. Beightol, signed a page on 22 February 1882; likely Edwin James Beightol, Theresa's older brother.  Many sources online have him as Edmund/Edmond, even Edward but it's Edwin on his marriage record.  He married Maggie Horrobin, another signer in the album.

  • Quinton Charles Beightol, Theresa's youngest brother, signed the last page in the album.  He included a reference to Beans, perhaps alluding to William Dilworth Bean, whom Theresa would marry about 1890.

William Dilworth Bean was born 27 September 1862 at Canal, Pennsylvania, the son of James and Jane Armstrong (Nelson) Bean.

Theresa and Willliam farmed at Canal,  Pennsylvania and raised a family of, I believe, four children: Joseph Andrew Bean; Charles Merrill Bean; Clara Dean and Ruth Dean, all born in the 1890s.

William died in 1921 at Canal, Pennsylvania.  Theresa died in 1946 in Venango County, Pennsylvania.

Other relatives who signed pages:
  • E. W. Beightol signed a page on 12 February 1882.
  • Lydia Beightol of Dempseytown, Pennsylvania, signed a page.
  • Callie Stevens signed a page on 1 May 1882.  She may have been related to the family of Theresa's mother, Clara M. (Stevens) Beightol.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

1880s Autograph Album of Charles Mutschler of Dushore, Pennsylvania

1880s autograph album that belonged to Charles Mutschler; most of the autographs appear to have been collected while Charles' family was living at Dushore, Pennsylvania where his father was a minister.

The album is approximately 4-1/2" x 3" and includes the sentiments of 42 of Charles' relatives, friends and schoolmates.  One of the signers was Charles' sister, Emma Mutschler, who penned her page in 1885.

Since it appears that several of the first pages are missing, including an ownership page with Charles name on it and a title page and more perhaps, it was Emma's page that helped me identify Charles.

Another signer gave Charles' name as C. Mutchler, in error.  There was a Pennsylvania family with the name Mutchler with a Charles and an Emma, so thankfully Emma thought to include her name with its correct spelling, to keep me on the right track.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

According to information on the interesting and full life of Charles' father, Civil War veteran Rev. Christian Henry Mutschler found here in "Northumberland County Biographies" [search the page for Mutschler], Charles Henry Mutschler was born 1 June 1871.  His mother was Rev. Mutschler's first wife, Lovenah Sarah (Bender) Mutschler.

About 1893 Charles married Bertha M., whose maiden name and place of birth I haven't yet found.  Hopefully a reader with knowledge of the family will happen by and leave a comment.

They lived at Sunbury, Pennsylvania and had at least one child, a daughter Ruth born about 1895.

If you have corrections and/or additional information on the Mutschler family, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

1880s Autograph Album of Ida Maud Barnes of Liberty, Pennsylvania

Autograph album that was presented by teacher J. Simpson, on 29 February 1884, to student Maud Barnes for improvement in spelling.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains pages signed by 24 people, including Maud's teacher, as noted, her siblings and friends.  A complete list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

A neat feature of the album is an illustration for each month of the year, shown at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Ida Maud Barnes was born about 1875 in Pennsylvania, the daughter of Philip S. and Elizabeth Barnes.  Maud had, I believe, six siblings, four of whom signed pages in her album.  In page order, the siblings who signed:

Maud's sister Emma Barnes signed a page at Harrisville, Pennsylvania, on 29 March 1884.

Maud's sister Julia Barnes signed a page on 12 April 1887.

Maud's sister Laura Barnes signed a page.

Maud's unnamed sibling signed a page on 30 June 1884 [or 1887].

Maud's unnamed aunt signed a page at Grove City, Pennsylvania, on 18 April 1884.

Maud's cousin, G. W. Boundy [not sure of surname - please leave a comment if you have a correction], signed a page at Grove City, Pennsylvania, on 29 June 1884.

If you have corrections to the information above or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

1880s Autograph Album of Hannah H. Smith of the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area

1880s autograph album that was presented to Hannah H. Smith by her cousin Ellie on 26 April 1884.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains the names of 90 people, many of whom were students at Girls Normal School at
Philadelphia or West Chester State Normal School.  A few of the signers penned individual pages and contributed to shared pages.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

I wasn't able to pinpoint Hannah H. Smith, though I saw a few possibilities.  Perhaps a reader will have knowledge of a Philadelphia area Hannah H. Smith who studied to be a teacher and had a sister named Lillie, whose page is shown below.

Another page was signed by two people named Smith: Lillie A. Smith of Glenwood, Pennsylvania, and Beckie M. Smith of West Point, Pennsylvania.

Lavinia Lewellin provided two sketches of birds with letters addressed to Hannah in their beaks.

Another signer, P. C. or P. E. Graham sketched a scroll with his name on it, dated 24 October 1884.

Several of the male signers who were students at West Chester State Normal School, included the word "Aryan" on their page, indicative, I imagine, of a fraternal group.

One such signer was D. Brower Longaker of Lansdale, Pennsylvania, who signed his page on 17 December 1889.  I'm assuming he was Davis Brower Longaker, whose maternal grandmother was Catherine (Brower) Longaker.

Two pages were signed by multiple people, presumably students at Hannah's school.  Hannah herself signed the first of the two shown.  Most signed individual pages of sentiments as well.

If you have information on Hannah H. Smith or any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!
