1880s/1890s Autograph Album of Emma Louisa Schoelles of Canal Dover, Ohio

1880s/1890s autograph album that belonged to Emma Schoelles of Canal Dover, Ohio.

Small autograph album, approximately 5" x 3+", with nearly 30 pages signed by Emma herself, her relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections welcome!]

Emma Louisa Schoelles was born 11 October 1883 in Ohio, perhaps at Tuscarawas Village, the daughter of Frederick and Susannah (Keppler) Schoelles, who both immigrated from Germany to the United States with their families when they were young.

Emma's paternal grandparents were Philip Henry Schoelles and Justina Margarethe Antoinetta (Koenig) Schoelles.  Her maternal grandparents were Frederich and Anna Barbara Keppler.

Some online trees have give Anna Barbara's name as Anna Barbara (Schoelles) Nickel, which led me to believe that she had been married to a Nickel before marrying Frederich Keppler.  However, some trees have her father as Jacob Heinrich Nickel, so I'm lost as to the significance of the name Schoelles in parentheses.  Perhaps a reader has more definitive information.

Three of Emma's brothers signed pages in her album.  Arthur Schoelles and Henry Schoelles signed pages on 9 January 1889.  Edward Schoelles didn't date his page.

Emma's maternal uncle William F. Keppler [Frederich Wilhelm Keppler or Wilhelm Frederich Keppler] signed two pages in Emma's album, the first one signed by someone other than Emma herself, dated 1889, and the last page, undated.

William's wife, Carrie (Reubensaal) Keppler also signed an undated page.  They were married 7 October 1888.

See the list below for pages signed by other relatives.

On 25 November 1911 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, Emma Louisa Schoelles married Jonas J. Bremer, son of Jonas and Catherine (Price) Bremer.  They had moved to Youngstown, Ohio, by the time of the birth of their son Jonas S. Bremer in 1915.  Jonas may have been an only child, as I didn't find a record of another child living with the family at the time of the Census enumerations.

By the time of the 1940 Census, Jonas and Emma were still at Youngstown, Ohio.  Their son Jonas, his wife and two children were living with them.

Emma Louisa (Schoelles) died in 1951.  Her widower Jonas Bremer died in 1963.
