1870s Autograph Album of Annie E. Carlyle of DeSoto, Wisconsin

1870s autograph album of Annie Eliza Carlyle of DeSoto, Wisconsin.

The album is approximately 4" x 3" and contains nearly 70 pages signed by relatives and friends.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections welcome]

Ann Eliza Carlyle was born about July 1859, daughter of Adam and Catherine Eliza (Cook) Carlyle, who were born at Forbeck Hill in Middlebie Parish, Scotland, and North Williamsburg, Ontario, Canada respectively.

Much of the information I found about the family is contained in the Biographical History of LaCrosse, Trempealeau and Buffalo Counties, Wisconsin, published in 1892.

Adam Carlyle, born 15 February 1825, came to Cornwall, Ontario, with his family in 1839, when he was about age fourteen.  He later moved to Williamsburg, Ontario, where he met and married Catherine Eliza Cook, daughter of John M. and Catherine (Hess) Cook.  She was born 18 April 1828 at North Williamsburg, Ontario.

About 1856, Adam and Catherine and their two children moved to DeSoto, Wisconsin.  They would go on to have, I think, six more children at DeSoto, one of whom was Annie, owner of the autograph album.

The page below was signed by Annie's father, though I can't make out the word he used for his first name.

Other Carlyle family members also signed pages in Annie's album.

Her oldest brother, Walter John Carlyle, who became a prominent Wisconsin figure, signed a page in 1879, assuming he is the W. J. Carlyle below.

Annie's sister Catherine Jane "Jennie" Carlyle signed a page in 1877.  Jennie was by then married to George Spangler.

Another of Annie's sisters signed a page in 1877.  She referred to Annie as Temperance and herself as Charity.

One of the last entries in the album appears to be a poem about Annie's impending move to Nebraska and possible marriage.  It was signed by, I think, by "7 Bub".  From what I could tell, Annie never married, or if she did, she took her maiden name back.

I didn't find a record of Annie in Nebraska, but I believe she is the Annie who was living at Huron, South Dakota, at the time of the 1910 Census.

She lived past the time that the 1940 Census of Plymouth, Wisconsin was enumerated.  She was then living with Vera and Clara Carlyle and was designated as an aunt in the household.
