Cabinet Photo of Samuel Fish; taken by Singhi, Rockland, Maine

Cabinet photograph of a bearded man identified on reverse as Samuel Fish.  The photograph was taken by Singhi studio of Rockland, Maine.  The identification hints that this photo was once accompanied by another of Samuel's mother, which might have provided a clue as to which Samuel Fish this is; there are several possibilities.

If you recognize this fellow from your family albums or from genealogy work you have done for someone else, I would most appreciate hearing from you.

This might be my great great Grandfather. I am currently doing family history research and know that Samuel Fish married Mary Powers around Orono Maine and had a daughter, Clarissa Fish, in 1868. An old census lists him as a lumberman. Any information you might have would be very helpful! I found this while googling him. Thank you for posting.

  2. It would be wonderful if this were your great, great grandfather! In your research, have you ever come across a Rockland connection or reason why he might have been in Rockland long enough to have his photograph taken? Was he in the Civil War? If so, what regiment? Was he a lumberman in the woods or a person who bought and sold lumber, perhaps sometimes shipping out of Rockland? Just some thoughts. Also, be on the lookout for someone who has the unique handwriting on the back of the photo. Does that handwriting appear in any other family photos or documents? Good luck!

  3. Also possibly my great grandfather.... Lynda is my sister.... what I know is that Samuel Fish married Mary Powers, they had 3 children born in Orono, Susan, William, and Clara (called Clarissa). Mary, William and Clara are buried in Bath, Maine, all died young, William never married, died at 30, Clara married Winfred (Fred) Snowdon, had 3 children before she died at 38yrs old. , Susans whereabouts are unknown, the demise of Samuel is unknown, so this picture astounds me!!!! We know that Samuel Fish had a brother named Thomas Fish, they were from the Pittston, Maine area as far as we know. Thomas Fish was killed in the civil war, and his name appears on the civil war monument in Bath. When Mary Fish died, she is listed as a widow on her death certificate, so the family has assumed SAMUEL died in the war, but have been able to locate either a war record, or a death certificate for him as of yet. Many persons in this are were sea captains, or worked on the sailing vessels, many of which were lost at sea. The demise of Samuel is still a mystery, the photo is amazing, would you be at all interested in selling it??? Thanks so much for the post and sharing this.
